<br />
My video tutorial for <a href="https://youtu.be/zR8j_CbtSWc" target="_blank">2-row crochet snowfake</a> has been popular. So this year I decided to make a one-row snowflake! It is quick to make. You can crochet one in any wool or yarn. I hardened it using white glue and water. A bit more glue than water.<br />
<br />
Plenty of time to make these for friends, family and your own Christmas tree this year.<br />

The more there is colour or texture in a craft project, the happier it makes me feel. I wanted to create a crochet square with many colours and some overlay.<br />
<br />
After trying out different possibilities I ended up with this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJgOlI2TfLkPVWP61sYg00lSjztO11xm1-CCGO7dTBTpWEp1eHXRnxambEM_NPMC92WPZ_1-XdhGTyQ4PMcNyyWOKxlsEK9tSUYoN2iQv0icYxJPKzbOu3bclb_tG-qsk_BYjmf1vwLh4/s1600/square-final-c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJgOlI2TfLkPVWP61sYg00lSjztO11xm1-CCGO7dTBTpWEp1eHXRnxambEM_NPMC92WPZ_1-XdhGTyQ4PMcNyyWOKxlsEK9tSUYoN2iQv0icYxJPKzbOu3bclb_tG-qsk_BYjmf1vwLh4/s400/square-final-c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Some of my trial pieces have more picots in the corner. I love picots that are either a differen colour from the rest of the row or span over several rows. At the end I changed this part slightly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8940-nVyUMc/VgzLkCujLLI/AAAAAAAAINg/ruzuuBd6Xrs/s1600/kulmat-testit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8940-nVyUMc/VgzLkCujLLI/AAAAAAAAINg/ruzuuBd6Xrs/s400/kulmat-testit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I keep browsing Instagram, Pinterest and Google image search for ideas. Here's a link to Google image search "<a href="https://www.google.fi/search?hl=fi&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1600&bih=742&q=crochet+overlay&oq=crochet+overlay&gs_l=img.3..0i19l8j0i30i19l2.2546.5867.0.6303.15.12.0.3.3.0.174.1113.8j3.11.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..1.14.1126.YlzBhF1xYJo" target="_blank">crochet overlay</a>". That gives me many ideas of the possible techniques. In Instagram I gave my square the hashtag #overlaysquare.<br />
<br />
I made a video tutorial of the square. This is the longest video I have published so far. It is in fact in 3 parts, otherwise it would have been half an hour long. Before editing I had an hour of clips. <br />
This is also a test to see if a more complicated pattern will work as video tutorial. Most of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/TuulaMaaria" target="_blank">my videos</a> use simple techniques and are short. <br />
<br />
A couple of colour variations:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Little by little I'm learning to create combinations that seem just right in my own eyes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5nU2WS01QUI/WNnuPMHDlFI/AAAAAAAAJto/wVbuXcfNL6E1fWJFqn7bunjtp52_5_apwCLcB/s1600/tossu-valmis-c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="varikkaat-virkatut-tossut" border="0" height="223" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5nU2WS01QUI/WNnuPMHDlFI/AAAAAAAAJto/wVbuXcfNL6E1fWJFqn7bunjtp52_5_apwCLcB/s400/tossu-valmis-c.jpg" title="Värikkäät virkatut tossut" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have used various left-over yarns. All are at least 70% wool. I had a crochet hook size 3.0 mm. My shoe size is 38 (5).<br />
<br />
I'm not writing a pattern as such, only giving some pointers.<br />
<h3>
Sole: </h3>
I started the sole in the middle. I used a chainless foundation (you can search that on Youtube if you are not familiar with the technique). But a chain works just as well. I had 32 stitches to start with. You crochet round the middle chain, increasing at both ends.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a-l8aPEFF_A/VPGnTRY9nGI/AAAAAAAAG70/0--ipiJPIUU/s1600/pohja1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="116" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a-l8aPEFF_A/VPGnTRY9nGI/AAAAAAAAG70/0--ipiJPIUU/s1600/pohja1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q7R_L7_bjMQ/VPGn4zowDeI/AAAAAAAAG78/bwJDqCAIQHA/s1600/pohja2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q7R_L7_bjMQ/VPGn4zowDeI/AAAAAAAAG78/bwJDqCAIQHA/s1600/pohja2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
At the stitch markers I started to widen the front of the sole.Used half trebles (British term) or half double crochet (American term).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3UViz-vF4/VPL6TXhkBWI/AAAAAAAAG8Q/MBMVI9bFTBU/s1600/pohja3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yh3UViz-vF4/VPL6TXhkBWI/AAAAAAAAG8Q/MBMVI9bFTBU/s1600/pohja3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2-SZxwOUzqI/VPL7P5pYPzI/AAAAAAAAG8Y/bvdrrGae-5o/s1600/pohja4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="158" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2-SZxwOUzqI/VPL7P5pYPzI/AAAAAAAAG8Y/bvdrrGae-5o/s1600/pohja4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JedpzFUgDHw/WNntKQWiqhI/AAAAAAAAJtc/oDEXGkyHFjIpSu6V8CAEqocu2UHY5aKEgCLcB/s1600/pohja5c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="virkattu-tossu-pohja" border="0" height="170" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JedpzFUgDHw/WNntKQWiqhI/AAAAAAAAJtc/oDEXGkyHFjIpSu6V8CAEqocu2UHY5aKEgCLcB/s400/pohja5c.jpg" title="Virkattu tossu, pohja" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One row of doubles (Br.) (singles, Am.) round the sole.<br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lvDZC5MHrhg/WNnt5BAu07I/AAAAAAAAJtk/qofSoYPiG6AZ6PmGDfigbWEuZnEGp9XKQCLcB/s1600/pohja6c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="virkattu-tossu-pohja" border="0" height="176" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lvDZC5MHrhg/WNnt5BAu07I/AAAAAAAAJtk/qofSoYPiG6AZ6PmGDfigbWEuZnEGp9XKQCLcB/s400/pohja6c.jpg" title="Virkattu tossu, pohja" width="400" /></a>
<br />
Turned the sole round. A row of slip stitches round the sole. This way the sole and the rest of the slipper will look more separate.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MjBs-Uk5wc4/WNnuvs3uIII/AAAAAAAAJt0/_UTOTlK40RovHA7ezNraqEeHIfTquZebQCLcB/s1600/pohja7c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="virkattu-tossu-pohja" border="0" height="173" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MjBs-Uk5wc4/WNnuvs3uIII/AAAAAAAAJt0/_UTOTlK40RovHA7ezNraqEeHIfTquZebQCLcB/s400/pohja7c.jpg" title="Virkattu tossu, pohja" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
Above the blue and green rows are in V-stitch. If you are not familiar with it, you can see the <a href="http://www.crochetgeek.com/2008/11/v-stitch-crochet-scarf.html" target="_blank">V-stitch chart here</a> (not my site but found that). <br />
<br />
After those I started to decrease stitches in the part that goes over the toes. I didn't count stitches, just checked that the shape seems to be right. The decreases are between the two stitch markers. In the rest of the slipper the number of stitches stays the same.<br />

<br />
The groups of trebles (British term, the American term is double crochet) were made so that you first crochet 4 trebles, take the hook off the stitch, insert it into the top on the first treble as well as the stitch and pull yarn through both.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mZLw7i7ul4/WNn0AmzBfQI/AAAAAAAAJuw/U-Z-s6XF_AwQ4YhXthOHq6cnzRnFs6HXgCLcB/s1600/pyoryla2c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="virkattu-kukka-tossuun" border="0" height="306" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mZLw7i7ul4/WNn0AmzBfQI/AAAAAAAAJuw/U-Z-s6XF_AwQ4YhXthOHq6cnzRnFs6HXgCLcB/s320/pyoryla2c.jpg" title="Virkattu kukka tossuun" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The last row is a picot edging. The blue yarn is hidden inside the double crochet stitches (or singles in American terms) from one picot to the next.<br />

This is my favourite. Decided to draw a chart of how to crochet it and planning on making a video, too. (Edit: video at the bottom of the page!).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M6gk4CU4mCA/VNRrirXJfSI/AAAAAAAAGzY/4FsfizsGXqY/s1600/heart1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M6gk4CU4mCA/VNRrirXJfSI/AAAAAAAAGzY/4FsfizsGXqY/s1600/heart1.jpg" height="371" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I was trying the heart out using white yarn just because I happened to have some on the table. I normally like more colourful things but I like the white heart too! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2aPhMO5v_lI/VNRr7k74AcI/AAAAAAAAGzg/99we2vfM_Es/s1600/heart-white.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2aPhMO5v_lI/VNRr7k74AcI/AAAAAAAAGzg/99we2vfM_Es/s1600/heart-white.jpg" height="397" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
Here is a chart for crocheting the heart. A few times I have used Photoshop or Illustrator for making charts but it is far too slow! This I just drew with a pencil!<br />
<br />
So you start in the middle by chaining 5. I marked the starts of rows on yellow pen.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_PUjfbndWkA/VJ2dbbtfkVI/AAAAAAAAGrc/xWuDXKn-MQ4/s1600/kori_lumessa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_PUjfbndWkA/VJ2dbbtfkVI/AAAAAAAAGrc/xWuDXKn-MQ4/s1600/kori_lumessa.jpg" height="355" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Finished this basket today, a Christmas present a bit late! I had been looking for ready-made baskets for my daughter but coulnd't find any of the right size. Decided to buy some of the tube yarn to crochet baskets myself. I gave her a note as Christmas present, explaining what kind of baskets I would make. <br />
<br />
I had been given exact measurements: width 30 cm, depth 25 cm, height 26 cm.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
I started out by crocheting the base part according to those measurements. Single crochet (British double crochet) back and forth to create a piece 30 x 25 cm. I used a crochet hook size 8.0 mm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lWbD5wh0y-Q/VJ2gAERQ6aI/AAAAAAAAGrw/mjBwlauzL2I/s1600/virkattu-kori-pohja1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lWbD5wh0y-Q/VJ2gAERQ6aI/AAAAAAAAGrw/mjBwlauzL2I/s1600/virkattu-kori-pohja1.jpg" height="208" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WrpJ31Zojzo/VJ2g2C6RipI/AAAAAAAAGr4/FEVr8N10nxc/s1600/virkattu-kori-pohja2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WrpJ31Zojzo/VJ2g2C6RipI/AAAAAAAAGr4/FEVr8N10nxc/s1600/virkattu-kori-pohja2.jpg" height="317" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After the base was finished, continued crocheting round it. This is what forms the basket, you just keep crocheting until the sides are high enough. You need to be careful not to increase the number of stitches at the corners.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4p1EClZD5cI/VJ2hsJuPtlI/AAAAAAAAGsA/JalbU0kjW_U/s1600/virkattu-kori-reunan-aloitus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4p1EClZD5cI/VJ2hsJuPtlI/AAAAAAAAGsA/JalbU0kjW_U/s1600/virkattu-kori-reunan-aloitus.jpg" height="200" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cml0z26aEE8/VJ2ipo7iIZI/AAAAAAAAGsM/doKaYlUDUHE/s1600/virkattu-kori-kulma.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cml0z26aEE8/VJ2ipo7iIZI/AAAAAAAAGsM/doKaYlUDUHE/s1600/virkattu-kori-kulma.jpg" height="270" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
For the first 5 rows after the base I took both loops of the previous row on the hook to create a firm bottom part of the basket. After that I wanted to form horizontal rows. That you get when taking only the back loop on the hook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r-0FhTxk3BI/VJ2jJ3bReHI/AAAAAAAAGsU/4OY1B3P-ng4/s1600/virkattu-kori-reuna.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r-0FhTxk3BI/VJ2jJ3bReHI/AAAAAAAAGsU/4OY1B3P-ng4/s1600/virkattu-kori-reuna.jpg" height="361" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After the basket was high enough I re-enforced the top edge by going round it a second time, using slip stitches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BFHBdWJ0RKM/VJ2kRkCBTqI/AAAAAAAAGsg/mLsay38U9og/s1600/virkattu-kori-ylareuna.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BFHBdWJ0RKM/VJ2kRkCBTqI/AAAAAAAAGsg/mLsay38U9og/s1600/virkattu-kori-ylareuna.jpg" height="207" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GumFSgssv8Q/VJ2lJJ-zJkI/AAAAAAAAGso/jxnasrv-xE0/s1600/virkattu-kori-ylareuna2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GumFSgssv8Q/VJ2lJJ-zJkI/AAAAAAAAGso/jxnasrv-xE0/s1600/virkattu-kori-ylareuna2.jpg" height="226" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The basket weighs 900 grams. My hands hurt a bit from the work, so I'm going to work on some lighter things for a couple of days before making more baskets. Promised to make 3 of those for my daughter. <br />

<br />
Happy with my finished Christmas decoration! Starched lace crochet.<br />
<br />
Here's the house without lights:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-deqRenMYYUE/VHi5JMHqPFI/AAAAAAAAGj4/R_YLmik_SjQ/s1600/talo-ilman-valoja.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-deqRenMYYUE/VHi5JMHqPFI/AAAAAAAAGj4/R_YLmik_SjQ/s1600/talo-ilman-valoja.jpg" height="301" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I sewed the roof pieces together at the top but the roof itself is just set on top of the walls. This makes it easier to fit the lights.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3X-E4kXLzMY/VHi5_smlpKI/AAAAAAAAGkA/HsLQDUJf-8o/s1600/valmiit_osat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3X-E4kXLzMY/VHi5_smlpKI/AAAAAAAAGkA/HsLQDUJf-8o/s1600/valmiit_osat.jpg" height="263" width="400" /> </a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-niuO3LRQSPA/VHi65mv7voI/AAAAAAAAGkI/VptcgiXP_gQ/s1600/valmis_paaty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-niuO3LRQSPA/VHi65mv7voI/AAAAAAAAGkI/VptcgiXP_gQ/s1600/valmis_paaty.jpg" height="400" width="318" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the first time I tried this and I'm happy with most things. I starched this using 50-50 sugar-water solution. Next time I might use glue-water to make it harder. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Haven't decided yet where I will display the house!</div>

The knitted pergola at thePalm Court entrance deserves its own posting. A few days ago I described <a href="http://purplecrafts.blogspot.fi/2014/10/inspiration-from-knitting-and-stitching.html">general impressions about the show</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
These give lots of ideas about using knitted flowers also in smaller scale projects. <br />

Lots of people have taken part in the project. I would love to know how many hours it took to attach all the flowers, leaves and birds!<br />

After that I spent a week in I, that is why I'm only writing about the show now. <a href="http://www.theknittingandstitchingshow.com/london/" target="_blank">Knitting and Stitching show</a> has such a wide selection of things to see. This is just an overview, more details later. <br />
<br />
At the Alexandra Palace Palm Court entrance there was a large pergola entirely covered with knitted flowers, leaves and some birds and other animals. Everybody seemed to take photos of it! It was used to collect money for charity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8GGJFCairHE/VEKOKqtsYeI/AAAAAAAAF4o/9YhJ5LCCOVM/s1600/pergola2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8GGJFCairHE/VEKOKqtsYeI/AAAAAAAAF4o/9YhJ5LCCOVM/s1600/pergola2.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3SH1ZOXVHM/VEKNlwvDaHI/AAAAAAAAF4g/1O9fvTWlza8/s1600/pergola1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3SH1ZOXVHM/VEKNlwvDaHI/AAAAAAAAF4g/1O9fvTWlza8/s1600/pergola1.jpg" height="333" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There were endless amounts of stalls to buy materials or products at. I had decided beforehand that I won't buy any wool as it takes up so much room on the flight. The part that I found most interesting was a gallery showing handknitted fashion of several arts college graduating students. It was great you were allowed to take photos of them freely.<br />
<br />
These lovely pieces are by Emma Wright, Nottingham Trent University:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOeUiBcf5QA/VEKQcM3LKPI/AAAAAAAAF40/UfsNfzt591o/s1600/emma-wright1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOeUiBcf5QA/VEKQcM3LKPI/AAAAAAAAF40/UfsNfzt591o/s1600/emma-wright1.jpg" height="400" width="273" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dQAUoSH8Md4/VEKQcajn-7I/AAAAAAAAF44/Y40KHKv73os/s1600/emma-wright2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dQAUoSH8Md4/VEKQcajn-7I/AAAAAAAAF44/Y40KHKv73os/s1600/emma-wright2.jpg" height="400" width="257" /></a></div>
<br />
Another lovely gallery exhibition was called Precious memories, by Jo Beattie. She had embroidered images based on old photos on very fine organza and hardened them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3cIO2O7LcEQ/VEKqFDWFpdI/AAAAAAAAF5g/M8Sd6h9j6As/s1600/jo-beattie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3cIO2O7LcEQ/VEKqFDWFpdI/AAAAAAAAF5g/M8Sd6h9j6As/s1600/jo-beattie.jpg" height="266" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
You could choose from a wealth of workshops and demonstrations. I tried out these jumbo needles - too hard for my wrists, I found!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4p6RyGeHf_c/VEKqueBHlaI/AAAAAAAAF5o/QmsAhjjQAfM/s1600/isot-puikot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4p6RyGeHf_c/VEKqueBHlaI/AAAAAAAAF5o/QmsAhjjQAfM/s1600/isot-puikot.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
But I will definitely try out making log cabin patchwork using a quicker technique than the traditional one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yysYsn1mXVc/VEKsvuK_c8I/AAAAAAAAF58/fl6f2yIPsPc/s1600/logcabin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yysYsn1mXVc/VEKsvuK_c8I/AAAAAAAAF58/fl6f2yIPsPc/s1600/logcabin.jpg" height="313" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As I love everything colourful and bright, it was lovely seeing embroideries from Gujarat, India.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sX53uqkPaGk/VEKujsbGdCI/AAAAAAAAF6Y/_U56bakWfBk/s1600/kirjonta.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sX53uqkPaGk/VEKujsbGdCI/AAAAAAAAF6Y/_U56bakWfBk/s1600/kirjonta.jpg" height="187" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Plenty to buy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oa_aqRalTHk/VEKoTm5SViI/AAAAAAAAF5U/YHuYnn_9ALM/s1600/lankakasa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oa_aqRalTHk/VEKoTm5SViI/AAAAAAAAF5U/YHuYnn_9ALM/s1600/lankakasa.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YRGwcsHx1Tc/VEKtOc6KTwI/AAAAAAAAF6E/4LdLa6YgIpM/s1600/tilkut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YRGwcsHx1Tc/VEKtOc6KTwI/AAAAAAAAF6E/4LdLa6YgIpM/s1600/tilkut.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The huge round window of the main hall in Alexandra Palace helped in knowing where I was.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--PZHCvuormI/VEKrdC_ac2I/AAAAAAAAF5w/o8T5Z71A4fI/s1600/ikkuna.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--PZHCvuormI/VEKrdC_ac2I/AAAAAAAAF5w/o8T5Z71A4fI/s1600/ikkuna.jpg" height="400" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
A great view towards central London from the front yard in Alexandra Palace:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N5QqavDL53I/VEKt9IfbwvI/AAAAAAAAF6Q/xYyaieTIZKY/s1600/maisema.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N5QqavDL53I/VEKt9IfbwvI/AAAAAAAAF6Q/xYyaieTIZKY/s1600/maisema.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9mz-heYve4U/VAynCp_mwoI/AAAAAAAAFfk/nb0Kb-Cab3c/s1600/enkeli2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9mz-heYve4U/VAynCp_mwoI/AAAAAAAAFfk/nb0Kb-Cab3c/s1600/enkeli2.jpg" height="400" width="362" /></a></div>
<br />
In the late 80's I decided to make a quick-t-crochet angel for Christmas tree. I was then working in Northern ireland as a craftsperson. I noticed how much people wanted to decorate their homes for Christmas. Over the years i have made hundreds of these, if not over a thousand. Many of the come put every Christmas time in Ireland, Finlad as well as many other countries. I have used these to send to friends instead of Christmas cards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VlpB8abrn34/VAysOhwIUnI/AAAAAAAAFf0/JG347HSIDdA/s1600/joulukuusi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VlpB8abrn34/VAysOhwIUnI/AAAAAAAAFf0/JG347HSIDdA/s1600/joulukuusi.jpg" height="275" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I decided to finally make instructions for crocheting the angel. This time the pattern is only on video. I want to see how many hits it will get. Making video tutorials is fun! Enjoy my accent that is a mix of Finnish and Northern Irish :)<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VoKmLYTBIHQ/U583rANXVdI/AAAAAAAAEuQ/LnvD1R8i3cA/s1600/ryhm%C3%A4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VoKmLYTBIHQ/U583rANXVdI/AAAAAAAAEuQ/LnvD1R8i3cA/s1600/ryhm%C3%A4.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My daughter has a yoga and dance hall with a boring staircase leading up to it. She wanted something bright, colourful and handmade for it. I decided to make crochet circles. Each circle is different.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ne4hWADxqA/VAQBuAdxjLI/AAAAAAAAFd8/YBKwGbxChpA/s1600/portaikko2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ne4hWADxqA/VAQBuAdxjLI/AAAAAAAAFd8/YBKwGbxChpA/s1600/portaikko2.jpg" height="400" width="383" /></a></div>
<br />
Many more are needed because the staircase is high. But this is a good start!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CDNFY2PkOV8/VAQB7GPS93I/AAAAAAAAFeE/6fyGZUDr0Wo/s1600/portaikko1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CDNFY2PkOV8/VAQB7GPS93I/AAAAAAAAFeE/6fyGZUDr0Wo/s1600/portaikko1.jpg" height="400" width="242" /></a></div>
<br />
Corner of the mirror:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dfnYaPpZusc/VAQCDD4NYII/AAAAAAAAFeM/lNOuNMdUxlQ/s1600/peili.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dfnYaPpZusc/VAQCDD4NYII/AAAAAAAAFeM/lNOuNMdUxlQ/s1600/peili.jpg" height="340" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
A couple of photos of the room itself. My daughter loves just as bright colours as I do!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iLy-WJAZCNE/VAQDK5t4MvI/AAAAAAAAFeY/DA2QCn1nBio/s1600/sali-nurkkaus.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iLy-WJAZCNE/VAQDK5t4MvI/AAAAAAAAFeY/DA2QCn1nBio/s1600/sali-nurkkaus.jpg" height="321" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yQqp0wIjCV4/VAQDK1rI12I/AAAAAAAAFeU/CuqtCI6iQW0/s1600/sali.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yQqp0wIjCV4/VAQDK1rI12I/AAAAAAAAFeU/CuqtCI6iQW0/s1600/sali.jpg" height="235" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This project taught me also not to take anything for granted. The girls had glued some of the circles with the wrong side facing up. I had forgotten that if someone doesn't crochet, they don't know which side is right or wrong! But I didn't turn them, the paint would have come with them!<br />
<br />Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-3218900583234477532014-08-23T20:47:00.000+03:002014-08-23T20:47:44.650+03:00Sock blockers using Ikea bendable chopping boardsI have long wanted to have sock blockers. Only I haven't wanted to buy them and have been too lazy to make them! I always wet finished socks thoroughly, shape them on a towel and let them dry. But that way it is hard to get them exactly the same shape and size. <br />
<br />
I had considered making them out of hobby clay that hardens in the oven. But I got a better idea from a discussion in a Facebook craft group. Someone mentioned they had made them using bendable <a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50153123/?query=DR%C3%84LLA+Bendable+chopping+board" target="_blank">chopping boards from Ikea</a> (<a href="http://hippusia.blogspot.fi/2012/07/diy-sukkablokit.html" target="_blank">Hippusia-blog</a>, in Finnish only). I decided to drop in at Ikea (15 minutes drive from my home) and get those to try that.<br />
<br />
The chopping boards come in packs of two. Price at the moment £1.40 in Britain, 1.99€ and the same in dollars.<br />
<br />
You need the boards, a carpet knife (or scissors you use for heavier work) and a base to cut on. I used a thick wooden baking board that pulls out of my kitchen units.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I drew a shape using a finished sock of the right size. When cutting the second one I used the first one like a stencil. With the second one I noticed that I could have saved some of the board for making blocks for children's socks by drawing the shape closer to the edge!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mQpdKAWMCjE/U_i1aiOgCaI/AAAAAAAAFaA/3Q7KNOrmZlI/s1600/blokit2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mQpdKAWMCjE/U_i1aiOgCaI/AAAAAAAAFaA/3Q7KNOrmZlI/s1600/blokit2.jpg" height="291" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I cut a hole to the top of the sock shape for hanging. Then I wrote the shoe size on the blocks. Make sure to use permanent felt tips!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dqiYvmpzmS0/U_i2OYpRfyI/AAAAAAAAFaI/CVU3A9GiQrs/s1600/blokit3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dqiYvmpzmS0/U_i2OYpRfyI/AAAAAAAAFaI/CVU3A9GiQrs/s1600/blokit3.jpg" height="400" width="336" /></a></div>
<br />
Finished! Easier to take photos of new socks, too, rather than photographing them on my own feet.<br />
These are hanging from my top closet door handles with Ikea hooks that are normally used to hang keys in my hall.<br />

<br />
This sweater is not one I have just finished but I haven't potographed it here before. It was fun making it in between other, smaller projects. Geometric shapes are easy to knit. I have crocheted them together from the right side. The collar rolls up. The sleeves are shaped from the top of the arm by decreasing stitches. I measured the sweater to an old one to get the right fit.<br />

<br />
From the close-up photo you may see that some bits have been knitted on a knitting machine, not by hand. I used to have a Bond knitter type of a machine. I didn't really like the kind of finish you could get using it, so I don't have it anymore. Using a knitting machine feels too much like work to me! You need to stay sitting by the machine and you can't concentrate on a TV programme or talking with people at the same time. <br />
<br />
But I love the colourful finish!Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-46578893837400047412014-08-20T15:30:00.000+03:002014-08-20T15:30:00.913+03:00Bridesmaid's and flowergirl's dressYesterday I posted <a href="http://purplecrafts.blogspot.fi/2014/08/wedding.html">about a wedding dress I made</a>. I also made one of the bridesmaid's dresses, for my daughter, and a flowergirl's dress for her daughter. The bride had selected coral as a colour for her wedding, and that was used for the dresses.<br />
<br />
The bridesmaids dresses are not at all what British or American ones would be! The bridesmaids wanted a print dress that would be wearable afterwards. They could not have had the same cut because the other bridesmaid was on her last month of pregnancy. She made her own dress. She also made a flowergirl's dress for her 2½-year-old daughter. But on the day the little grl wouldn't wear it because she said it was scratcy at the shoulders! Instead, she wore an ordinary cotton summer dress for the wedding.<br />
<h3>
Flowergirl's dress</h3>
We decided to make dresses of two different fabrics. The top one is transparent sheer fabric. The skirt part is a fairy dress style, with two squares set on top of each other.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MoVVfJ0d5E8/U9ooehPtw8I/AAAAAAAAFK0/m2pACDNlUIM/s1600/alessia+puku.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MoVVfJ0d5E8/U9ooehPtw8I/AAAAAAAAFK0/m2pACDNlUIM/s1600/alessia+puku.jpg" height="400" width="278" /></a></div>
<br />
Below a phone photo I sent to the other bridesmaid to show how the pieces of the bottom part of the dress were arranged.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUcyrzde8yg/U9oprUfkwWI/AAAAAAAAFLA/3OEJF5-4rzk/s1600/alessia_kesken.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zUcyrzde8yg/U9oprUfkwWI/AAAAAAAAFLA/3OEJF5-4rzk/s1600/alessia_kesken.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The skirt part consists of a square of each fabric, with a round hole in the middle. The hole is 1/3 larger than the girl's measurement around the chest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<h3>
Bridesmaid's dresses</h3>
The bridesmaid's dress is made of fabric that feels like a scarf. My daughter chose the shape to be copied from her sister's old evening dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ycRGZsqiiyM/U9ppdWPCKdI/AAAAAAAAFLc/J-d8Mbu2ssA/s1600/sharon3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ycRGZsqiiyM/U9ppdWPCKdI/AAAAAAAAFLc/J-d8Mbu2ssA/s1600/sharon3.jpg" height="400" width="302" /></a></div>
<br />
The dress is bare back.<br />

I loved the wedding because the bride and groom had managed to make everything show their own personalities!Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-10779486520868318702014-08-19T15:00:00.000+03:002014-08-19T15:00:00.428+03:00Wedding!Years ago, when I used to be a fulltime craftsperson in Belfast, sewing wedding dresses was one of my favourite kinds of work. After a long break from it I was asked to make a dress for a daughter's friend. She was very specific in what she wanted and couldn't find it ready-made: 50's style, knee length with accents in coral colour.<br />
<br />
The wedding was on a hot weekend on a small island outside Turku.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j95W1Ya9GFw/U9fXwsYCVfI/AAAAAAAAFJk/ZAyNrAIN8Ic/s1600/kalliolla.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j95W1Ya9GFw/U9fXwsYCVfI/AAAAAAAAFJk/ZAyNrAIN8Ic/s1600/kalliolla.jpg" height="400" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
The dress is thick ivory satin. The bodice is partly covered by lace. The bride bought it in Stockholm. There is 10 metres of tulle netting under the skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pAvgT-Pn41U/U9fZpmYPxxI/AAAAAAAAFJ8/LRLHKcJaUw4/s1600/takaa.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pAvgT-Pn41U/U9fZpmYPxxI/AAAAAAAAFJ8/LRLHKcJaUw4/s1600/takaa.JPG" height="400" width="231" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ulmjiCqTLbo/U9ffogOaCCI/AAAAAAAAFKk/vMz29i5UaGE/s1600/edest%C3%A4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ulmjiCqTLbo/U9ffogOaCCI/AAAAAAAAFKk/vMz29i5UaGE/s1600/edest%C3%A4.jpg" height="400" width="183" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm used to doing most of my sewing by making big alterations to patterns or completely without patterns, just drawing the shape directly on the material. There was a pattern for the bodice but after alterations it ended up quite different. I drew the full circle skirt on the fabric with a pen, using a builder's measure. I don't sew much now so my tools aren't up to date! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is boning at the back of the bodice. The plastic boning wasn't of great quality because bits started sticking at the bride just before the first dance! We had to get the ends cut off in a rush. Need to find out where to get boning that stays the way it should be! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The bride's lovely shoes came from an American online store:<br />

It was a great day, apart from being too hot!Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-31204851388044759952014-08-18T00:30:00.000+03:002014-08-18T00:30:00.417+03:00Yarnbombing in SeptemberI have worked with yarnbombing projects in the past. The largest was in my hometown Turku last year. You can see photos of the <a href="https://plus.google.com/photos/105874170245431837569/albums/5879366093706086353" target="_blank">Knit 'n' Tag-project here</a>.<br />
<br />
Now there is a new project I'm taking part in. It is tied to a charity project of getting people to knit hats for a prem baby unit. A petrol station + restaurant complex near Tampere, Finland will be covered with lots of graffiti inside and out. I'm involved in coordinating some of it through a Facebook group. There will also be school children taking part as part of their craft learning.<br />
<br />
I have made a few pieces now, mainly crochet.<br />

Hope to get many more made before it will all go up on the 15th of September!Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-88241281067660863542014-08-17T08:30:00.000+03:002014-08-17T08:30:57.012+03:00Baby blanketsIn the spring I crocheted a blanket for my grandson before he was born.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bWFMgr7WhYs/U0qQnp-jTvI/AAAAAAAAEkA/h2zNwpEcZG0/s1600/peitto-valmis2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bWFMgr7WhYs/U0qQnp-jTvI/AAAAAAAAEkA/h2zNwpEcZG0/s1600/peitto-valmis2.jpg" height="400" width="332" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jqeinF3PY2Y/U0qQnQqOd3I/AAAAAAAAEj8/G_SAEwS6Yko/s1600/peitto-valmis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jqeinF3PY2Y/U0qQnQqOd3I/AAAAAAAAEj8/G_SAEwS6Yko/s1600/peitto-valmis.jpg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When he was a few weeks old, the blanket fell off the pram. Even though the person walking the pram returned very soon to look for the blanket, somebody had already taken it :( So, I decided to make a new one. This one is the same colour but a bit heavier wool, with autumn and winter coming.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gcPhk0ro2ks/U-Th1CI4aQI/AAAAAAAAFRY/nokxHmEtHPQ/s1600/peitto-lahi1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gcPhk0ro2ks/U-Th1CI4aQI/AAAAAAAAFRY/nokxHmEtHPQ/s1600/peitto-lahi1.jpg" height="242" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted a square I hadn't made before. By googling images for 'crochet square' I found this square: <a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5129/5731174379_fb58b11a23_z.jpg" target="_blank">https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5129/5731174379_fb58b11a23_z.jpg</a>. Later in a Facebook group someone told me that there is a <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/on-the-huh-crochet-square" target="_blank">free pattern on Ravelry for a very similar square</a>. It includes a chart of the stitches, so I'm not drawing a chart of the square here. My square is not exactly the same, I made it on the basis of the photo in the first link.<br />
<br />
The square is 12 x 12 cm (4 and 3/4 in square) The center is always white and the last row is turqoise, otherwise the colours vary.<br />
<br />
My daughter wanted something in between each square in white. I showed her a few different ways of joining squares and she chose this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GDZcfof1Jwc/U-TlfV_KJRI/AAAAAAAAFRk/kN8g-x98ALo/s1600/kiinnitys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GDZcfof1Jwc/U-TlfV_KJRI/AAAAAAAAFRk/kN8g-x98ALo/s1600/kiinnitys.jpg" height="278" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It is 2 chain stitches and attached so that I skip 2 stitches, alternating between the squares to be attached. <br />
<br />
I first made strips of 4 squares and then attached the strips together.<br />

<br />
I have been making the blanket in a number of different places. Here it is in Rowallane Gardens near Belfast, Northern Ireland:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OwSLYvM9y2w/U-TqpkoZqxI/AAAAAAAAFR8/ZzdICxn9DYc/s1600/rowallane.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OwSLYvM9y2w/U-TqpkoZqxI/AAAAAAAAFR8/ZzdICxn9DYc/s1600/rowallane.jpg" height="328" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And here in the Samppalinna park in Turku. It was 30<span class="st">°</span>C on the day I took that photo, so the woollen blanket felt quite warm!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
And here the finished blanket:<br />

WONDERFUL! But just that I came across in my evening walk in Bangor, Northern Ireland.<br />

Each brightly coloured cubicle has two workshops. The occupants represent different kinds of arts and crafts, from paper craft to loom weaving and ceramics and fine art to sewing and working with yarn. Each one is in their own workshop in full view of the passers by!<br />

<br />
One of my daughters just had her first child, a baby boy! Here in Finland each new mother get this pack full of baby clothes and items, from the social security. It includes a boring white hat that all mums seem to wear on their babies. I thought of making a nicer one if you really think that a newborn should wear a hat, often even inside. I didn't but then I didn't bring my children up in Finland until they were much older! <br />
(Here's a link to the hat in question: <a href="http://www.kela.fi/documents/10180/1525732/2014_Myssy/97eac646-59a9-4bc9-b722-82025f689aed?t=1392382842129" target="_blank">www.kela.fi/documents/10180/1525732/2014_Myssy/97eac646-59a9-4bc9-b722-82025f689aed?t=1392382842129 </a>) <br />

Surprising we managed to organise a baby shower for her without her guessing anything!<br />
<br />
I only ever heard about nappy cakes (diaper cakes) a few months ago. Daughter number 3 wanted us to make one for the baby shower. We googled for ideas and instructions. It was fun! Surprising how many nappies it took, 2½ packets of size 2.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MlM1nJhjhkI/U0BeGk6Bm7I/AAAAAAAAEh0/YgU7Na5vQ1s/s1600/vaippakakku-valmis1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MlM1nJhjhkI/U0BeGk6Bm7I/AAAAAAAAEh0/YgU7Na5vQ1s/s1600/vaippakakku-valmis1.jpg" height="640" width="364" /></a></div>
<br />
Started by rolling up the nappies and attaching with elastic bands. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kXdstinzfKg/U0BeuiOPPzI/AAAAAAAAEh8/IRuWOAtAOVw/s1600/vaipparullat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kXdstinzfKg/U0BeuiOPPzI/AAAAAAAAEh8/IRuWOAtAOVw/s1600/vaipparullat.jpg" height="307" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There needs to be something in the middle that the nappies go around. We had seen photos of bottles being used for that. But I took a cardboard roll that had been in the centre of a roll of fabric. We attached baby grows around it. You could put all sorts of baby things in the middle of the cake.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_4WrWUN20o/U0BfkDBR8pI/AAAAAAAAEiE/IUguCJ4fS4s/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_4WrWUN20o/U0BfkDBR8pI/AAAAAAAAEiE/IUguCJ4fS4s/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken1.jpg" height="400" width="255" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2vjDJCUm9wk/U0BgWrmqJhI/AAAAAAAAEiM/JUFKZ60BJGk/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2vjDJCUm9wk/U0BgWrmqJhI/AAAAAAAAEiM/JUFKZ60BJGk/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken2.JPG" height="400" width="272" /></a></div>
Each row of nappies needs to be tied securely. We first put an elastic band and slipped the nappies inside it. When the row was finished, we tied it with a cord at two different places.<br />
<br />
We ended up with 4 layers. The top layer only contains one row of nappies and there are no baby grows there anymore to pad it.<br />
<br />
To finish we put a teddy bear at the top of the cake. The poor teddy didn't stay there until I stuck a metal knitting needle into him!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B_YlRxxMj5c/U0BhH_Xq2CI/AAAAAAAAEiU/5ijf3YEKjW8/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B_YlRxxMj5c/U0BhH_Xq2CI/AAAAAAAAEiU/5ijf3YEKjW8/s1600/vaippakakku-kesken3.JPG" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
The tying cords are covered with ribbons and bows, whatever you come up with. The baby to be born is a boy so we had blue ribbons. We also used tiny socks and a pair of baby shoes to decorate the cake. <br />
<br />
We wanted one of the layers have a different decoration. I sewed a pompom ribbon on white fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XHuPv3kqy3g/U0Bj1WwLDzI/AAAAAAAAEig/d-Zy36UDXVs/s1600/pallonauha.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XHuPv3kqy3g/U0Bj1WwLDzI/AAAAAAAAEig/d-Zy36UDXVs/s1600/pallonauha.jpg" height="400" width="365" /></a></div>
<br />
The bottom part of the finished cake:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iAIJlfb34fU/U0BkI9J-1nI/AAAAAAAAEio/jI2DPaUHHKU/s1600/vaippakakku-alaosa1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iAIJlfb34fU/U0BkI9J-1nI/AAAAAAAAEio/jI2DPaUHHKU/s1600/vaippakakku-alaosa1.jpg" height="400" width="348" /></a></div>
<br />
Part of the programme at the baby shower was a guessing game: when will the baby be born and what size will he be. I just hope he won't be as late as his mum who was born 19 days late!<br />

<br />
I have been testing different ways of making baby booties. This type is quick to knit and easy to create different looking booties. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wD9fSful7t8/TmJ20Hr03QI/AAAAAAAABX0/gQg7zzRr93M/s1600/vauvantossut1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wD9fSful7t8/TmJ20Hr03QI/AAAAAAAABX0/gQg7zzRr93M/s400/vauvantossut1.jpg" height="331" width="400" /></a></div>
This pair is in my favourite colours, in shades of pink and lilac.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdwJhLA4Tks2PGV_S5QDmcb2QDrM96imUtYZ-IMgzjNUqZt6kbSMJQRzpt5Hez-RnLJV9OQN_8SVKgF-xiGzJNgpyVe1mQoB6OFFyOG1WerO5BDqz2ldpXLCQlJXm23rIllfJxpCwf9d0/s1600/tossut2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdwJhLA4Tks2PGV_S5QDmcb2QDrM96imUtYZ-IMgzjNUqZt6kbSMJQRzpt5Hez-RnLJV9OQN_8SVKgF-xiGzJNgpyVe1mQoB6OFFyOG1WerO5BDqz2ldpXLCQlJXm23rIllfJxpCwf9d0/s1600/tossut2.jpg" height="348" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have looked at different patterns for making booties to come up what I find nice-looking and quick to make. <br />
<br />
You begin knitting in the middle of the sole. The bootie can be knitted entirely on two needles and sewn together at the end, or you can take double pointed needles and knit the cuff on the round. I like doing it that way. <br />
<br />
Yarn: I have used Gjästal Maija or Novita Nalle - any yarn that is about 130 m/50 g (142 yd/1.75 oz) (Doubleknitting weight)<br />
Knitting needles 3,5 mm (US size 4)<br />
Gauge: 21s = 10cm (4 in) <br />
The finished lenght of the sole is 9 cm (3½ in).<br />
<br />
The pattern is for this bootie, the other photos here have some things added to them:<br />

<b><b>Row </b>5</b>: Purl<br />
<b><b>Row </b>6</b>: Fold work at eyelet row. Pick up the first loop of first row on different colour and knit together with working stitch. Repeat to end of row..<br />
<br />
Alternately, if you find it difficult to pick stitches and knit them together, you can sew the picot edging afterwards.<br />
<br />
This photo below shows the finished sole and half of the picot edging has been done.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>Side of foot</b><br />
<br />
After finishing th epicot edge knit stockinette for 8 rows.<br />
<br />
<b>Top of foot </b>(decreases that make the form of the foot part)<br />
<br />
Stockinette. <br />
<b>1. krs</b>: k 23 , [sl1, k1, psso] , turn work (to go back without finishing the row)<br />
<b>2. krs</b>: p 6, p2tog, turn work.<br />
<b>3.krs</b>: k 6, [sl1, k1, psso] , turn work.<br />
Continue the same way until 12 sts left on both sides of the centre part with decreases (31 sts altogether). Purl last decrease row to end of row without turning.<br />
<b>2 more rows</b> of stockinette.<br />
<br />
Photo below: Decreases of the top of the foot partly done. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ifIuYYbGK7s/TmKQsFtsizI/AAAAAAAABYY/TD8tHB82C8Y/s1600/vauvantossut5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ifIuYYbGK7s/TmKQsFtsizI/AAAAAAAABYY/TD8tHB82C8Y/s400/vauvantossut5.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Cuff</b><br />
<br />
Ribbing: k1 p1 for 14 rows. Bind off sts.<br />
<br />
(If you make the cuff on the round, increase 1 st before starting cuff to get even number of sts for ribbing.)<br />
<br />
Here the finished piece before sewing the back together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hoO8prUeWTc/TmKRB4mwVAI/AAAAAAAABYc/-JbBDo2KdzY/s1600/vauvantossut6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hoO8prUeWTc/TmKRB4mwVAI/AAAAAAAABYc/-JbBDo2KdzY/s400/vauvantossut6.jpg" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Sew up a seam for the sole and back. Use threads left from the knitting if they are long enough. <br />
<br />
<hr />
<br />
If you prefer, you can knit the cuff part in the round on double pointed needles. I do it this way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fdrjdbepivY/TmKSMdoqxTI/AAAAAAAABYg/Cl_VP7IpaFc/s1600/vauvantossut7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fdrjdbepivY/TmKSMdoqxTI/AAAAAAAABYg/Cl_VP7IpaFc/s400/vauvantossut7.jpg" height="347" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The green and white bootie is a variation of the same pattern. The side of the foot is in garter stitch and the top of the foot is ribbing. I made a separate piece for the strap and sewed it on. It is 12 stitches and 3 rows.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D2fjZyS1KMQ/Uv-gAduXwwI/AAAAAAAAEV8/25mPKl9A84k/s1600/valmis1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D2fjZyS1KMQ/Uv-gAduXwwI/AAAAAAAAEV8/25mPKl9A84k/s1600/valmis1.jpg" height="320" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I wanted some patterning in my new mittens but without having to change colours. Here I have the same two yarns all the time, the design comes from alternating plain tunisian crochet and the honeycomb stitch. I made up the design while working.<br />
<br />
I love wearing mittens in Tunisian crochet, they are so firm and warm. The yarn is Viking Ville and Gjestal Maija, 75% wool 25% polyester for strength.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UcagpAreDeU/Uv-hpBOMwiI/AAAAAAAAEWI/paukJDKBDJI/s1600/aloitus1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UcagpAreDeU/Uv-hpBOMwiI/AAAAAAAAEWI/paukJDKBDJI/s1600/aloitus1.jpg" height="400" width="392" /></a></div>
This was the first time I used two kinds of stitches together, so you will find some errors!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-usCCZ6uxAM0/Uv-iNlAushI/AAAAAAAAEWQ/q1-3byb_5Ug/s1600/peukalo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-usCCZ6uxAM0/Uv-iNlAushI/AAAAAAAAEWQ/q1-3byb_5Ug/s1600/peukalo.jpg" height="301" width="400" /></a></div>
A good size thumb gore is even more important in crocheted mittens than in knitted ones because Tunisian crochet is quite stiff.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2ssY9Ivd2Bs/UtLncOGdjmI/AAAAAAAAETA/IIxNkGr2VMs/s1600/benjamin-valmis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="251" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2ssY9Ivd2Bs/UtLncOGdjmI/AAAAAAAAETA/IIxNkGr2VMs/s1600/benjamin-valmis.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
My daughter's dog Benjamin came to stay with me over the weekend. No clothes with him, and we got the first proper frost of the winter. So I decided to make a sweater for him in a hurry - such a tiny dog needs something to keep him warm in the snow! I used wool yarn for warmth.<br />
<br />
Benjamin hates fitting clothes on, as you can see in his expressions! But since I had no pattern and anyway every dog is a different size, I had to try it on him.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PSc71RSYsBE/UtLnb1f0PsI/AAAAAAAAESs/GtdYtIkWGU8/s1600/benjamin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PSc71RSYsBE/UtLnb1f0PsI/AAAAAAAAESs/GtdYtIkWGU8/s1600/benjamin1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I used 3 different yarns, just to use up some of my stash.Knitting needles size 4.0 mm.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eBW3pr_5pGc/UtLnX3OnfTI/AAAAAAAAESk/Gju88pjoUKc/s1600/benjamin2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eBW3pr_5pGc/UtLnX3OnfTI/AAAAAAAAESk/Gju88pjoUKc/s1600/benjamin2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
First I made 3 separate strips, each 10 stitches wide. The length is from the collar to the start of the tail. I crocheted them together from the right side. I picked stitches from the neck on to double pointed needles and cast on more to have 48 stitches to knit the collar.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uzt8X2AQWRA/UtLnbuQppjI/AAAAAAAAES0/HPKJQp4dabo/s1600/benjamin3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uzt8X2AQWRA/UtLnbuQppjI/AAAAAAAAES0/HPKJQp4dabo/s1600/benjamin3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The collar is 5 cm long (2 in).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a6ez05rJ2tY/UtLnc5-9ndI/AAAAAAAAETE/u7E8PNRU154/s1600/benjamin4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="350" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a6ez05rJ2tY/UtLnc5-9ndI/AAAAAAAAETE/u7E8PNRU154/s1600/benjamin4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Then I picked stitches from the start of the collar to make the bit for the dog's chest. You also need holes for the legs. For a female dog the bit under the tummy can be much longer!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kdFXOiehfaE/UtLndkIMPaI/AAAAAAAAETU/rPHs6TcMVNk/s1600/benjamin5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="342" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kdFXOiehfaE/UtLndkIMPaI/AAAAAAAAETU/rPHs6TcMVNk/s1600/benjamin5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V7YlOrCPgAQ/UtLnd7ci05I/AAAAAAAAETY/YllDIg4fEJA/s1600/benjamin6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V7YlOrCPgAQ/UtLnd7ci05I/AAAAAAAAETY/YllDIg4fEJA/s1600/benjamin6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Added short "stockings" for the front legs and the yellow border so that the grey and brown strips won't curl. Finally, small loops to fit around the hind legs so the back stays in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-avb6sek_EWE/UtLneZcpOvI/AAAAAAAAETg/BzE9bTAREeI/s1600/benjamin7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-avb6sek_EWE/UtLneZcpOvI/AAAAAAAAETg/BzE9bTAREeI/s1600/benjamin7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yYpWaf4Qitc/UslbhBgDxTI/AAAAAAAAERI/hUBG6t7-7b0/s1600/kuvio1939.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yYpWaf4Qitc/UslbhBgDxTI/AAAAAAAAERI/hUBG6t7-7b0/s400/kuvio1939.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I found a women's magazine from the year 1939 among Mum's things. In many ways it felt sad to read it as it had been printed a short time before the war started also in Finland. So many hard years were ahead.<br />
<br />
There was an article about different kinds on lace. I especially liked the one in the photo. The photo is not sharp, I tried many different ways to sharpen it but the original simply is what printing was at that time. Someone said it might be bobbin lace but it looks crochet to me. There aren't any kind of instructions or chart. Here my first try to make one like it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FHHJ2RR4h-8/UslcchVR4uI/AAAAAAAAERQ/QoNiRdavoTo/s1600/kuvio1939-villalanka.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FHHJ2RR4h-8/UslcchVR4uI/AAAAAAAAERQ/QoNiRdavoTo/s400/kuvio1939-villalanka.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
To make one like in the photo you would need very thin crochet thread and a small hook. I used wool and a crochet hook 3.0 mm, so the result is a circle of 22 cm (8½ in).<br />
<br />
It took a while to work out the order of the different parts! You could get the same result in many different ways, I'm sure.<br />
<br />
I didn't want the petals (or leaves) so tightly together. But by not adding the chain stitch between each double treble it would be tighter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_3TOMzd0epI3YLGKJmG1mFn8ghof3PBt-0hHWrY2PJcaYlR6K6TrR4Pnu28EACcL73GHZ9yz3i1NmDXR5Tluat-5Guu5weC_A7w7sI2gaWja7J_jwhADd4EsuTThu4UyjuDnALP7YbM/s1600/close-up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_3TOMzd0epI3YLGKJmG1mFn8ghof3PBt-0hHWrY2PJcaYlR6K6TrR4Pnu28EACcL73GHZ9yz3i1NmDXR5Tluat-5Guu5weC_A7w7sI2gaWja7J_jwhADd4EsuTThu4UyjuDnALP7YbM/s400/close-up.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We'll see if I end up making something using this pattern design!Tuula Maariahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07205385108429190327noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683882698616394629.post-72443489744601143642014-01-03T19:49:00.002+02:002014-01-03T19:49:35.459+02:00Collage of 2013 projectsI have a folder on my computer called Craftblog 2013. <br />
Freeform is one of my favourte techniques. You can mix many techniques, this is knitting and crochet. I began using freeform when I was still at school. The photo below was in a Finnish fashion and craft magazine in the late 70's. I took part in their competition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KZO0Db3Rvnw/Ur_0Bx-KV6I/AAAAAAAAEQU/du7MODmKyjw/s1600/muoti-kauneus-pusero-ilman-nimea.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="370" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KZO0Db3Rvnw/Ur_0Bx-KV6I/AAAAAAAAEQU/du7MODmKyjw/s400/muoti-kauneus-pusero-ilman-nimea.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The challenge in freeform is to create the work in such a way that the item stays flat and grows evenly. At the same time, it is easy to make corrections as they don't look like corrections! In the photo below the arrow points to a wedge that I added simply because the scarf had narrowed down.<br />

<br />
I have used a number of different yarns but they are all wool or alpaca and of such weight that size 3.0 mm needles and hook were suitable.<br />
